I think that Lars is a cock.

I think that as a drummer he is average.

But It's easy to dismiss Metaliica and for years, although I have all their albums, I can honestly say that I have never been able to listen to a whole album.

However, no matter how fashionable it is to jump on the bandwagon, this is the first album I have listened to many times right the way though and I think it excellent.

Slag em off if you will. but they have made a GOOD living out of playing the music they love.

How many of us wish we could say the same?

Listen to a whole Metallica album,

Listen to one Nickelback track,

Cut your own knob off with a rusty cat food lid.

Given the choice, it would be a hard one, I'd go for the last one!

Lars is, without a doubt, an average (at best) drummer. When Metallica played Download without Ulrich, Joey Jordison and Dave Lombardo sat in for him and even unrehearsed played the songs better than he ever has. Even his drumtech did a better job! I've seen Dream Theater do the entire 'Master Of Puppets' album and Portnoy played everyting better than Ulrich. 'Battery' for instance didn't waver, tempo wise, whereas with Lars speeds up and slows down all the time.

I too have loads of metallica live stuff (from the earliest gigs I saw by them, like the Lyceum) and his drumming is all over the place. His timekeeping is shocking! There's a version of 'Whiplash' I have that slows down so much by the time the song kicks in it's laughable.

But Metallica wouldn't be the same without him.

Look at AC/DC, both Simon Wright and Chris Slade are streets ahead of Phil Rudd technically but neither of them could play the songs as well as Rudd, not even close.

Some bands just sound 'right' regardless.

I'm not talking about the quality of the recordings, or Lars's overall drumming.

Just THAT song, there.

It's off.

Drumming's great - you can join a band without having to be musical! ;)
