In the past I've downloaded a complete guitar lessons course & also bought a chords book. I seem to find myself faced with 2 problems. 1. The course & the book seem to cnflict with chord pattern diagrams & I therefore get confused (yes, very easily done to me I know, lol). 2. Because of 1 above (or maybe that's just a cop out), I don't have as much discipline as I should to practice due to fearing I'm learning the wrong thing. I do, however, seem to get on really well if I have someone kinda saying "yep, you're doing that right" BUT I don't want to commit to paid for lessons as such. Hmmm? |

I know that the genaral trend is for self-taught but I have to advocate the other side (I'd almost go as far to say that there's a snobbery against lessons). I was self taught for several years and developed my own style but was always frustrated by not know how to advance beyond my restritive knowledge. I started having lessons with Martin Reed and, after an initial bedding in period (of KNOWLEDGE!!! ..you perverts), my playing improved in leaps and bounds. I'm very grateful for everything he's taught me and I'm still learning from it... even though I haven't had a lesson in a few years. Even though he's a guitarist and I'm a bassist, the knowlege is still transferrable and I found it a very productive working relationship. Incidently, I feel that your average rock bassists potentially stand to benefit more from some applied understanding of thorey than the guitarists. It opened my eyes to new ways to approach songs and construct basslines. I'm nowhere near where I want to be but I feel I would still be plateaued and stale had I not had the lessons I did. It worked for me.

What lessons did you have? The volume control?????
Kidding, this man rocks all six strings just like Dman said he would. When you ask the best bass player that you have ever seen in your entire career (that's you, ginger bollocks! Mohawk, do you teach at the moment? You should. |

I think it's advantageous to learn to read music, and I think it's doubly advantageous to have a good grasp of musical theory. I think if you have these skills, you will advance more easily. I think teaching yourself is much easier with these under your belt. I think if you have individual tuition, you need a teacher who is sympathetic to your way of learning. Have a teacher who will get you to Grade 8 and beyond if that's for you. Teaching yourself another instrument is a lot easier when you have good ability on another. I've taught myself basic guitar without a teacher. I used my keyboard skills and theory to find my way on acoustic guitar. I sought related chords. Relative majors / relative minors. Sevenths. And so on. Don't leave anything too late. |

I agree ReallyBrown. I have a very tenuous grasp of reading and it's something I'm angling to improve. I have a stack of cello and double bass books on my shelf from the library so I can learn to read the notation. Also trying to learn a completely alien style of music: Latin. I think it all helps to make a more proficient and rounded musician. Icon you mofo, you almost made me blush! When you say things like that I feel under loads of pressure to perform! Play it down a little. I used to teach a couple of lads but I neither have the time nor space to teach at the moment. Gonna exchange lessons with Rich though (once he's done with all his honeymoon stuff). I'm tching to improve my drumming skillz. |

I think we should get Damo's teacher along to the charity day in July |

I had a few lesons to get me going. It was alright. Good enough teacher, just not enough in what I was learning to interest me. I think persistence paid off for me, really. Lessons were great for learning what was going on, but it sort of introduced a clinical aspect to it. I was learning blues and I think consciously now that I never start songs in E....I think if I'd carried it on I'd be playing in a more bog-standard style to what I do now.
When Andy and I recorded Sunny Whitsun Days together, I remember a clear look of confusion on his face when he saw what I was playing for the first time, because it is basically nonsense chords. That was quite a pleasant moment for me, and I don't think it would've happened if I'd had more lessons.
I've tried reading sheet music but it's not happening. I can't do it fast enough, and to be honest, its only slightly less annoying and retarded than tabs to me these days... |
