My point is that it's all subjective.

And it doesn't matter if I've seen you or not.  I can form my opinion through the vids i've seen, and my countless experiences with other guitarists and musicians that I have seen live.

I wouldn't expect you to step out of those typical pub ethics (which I know you could probably do).

There is a certain way of playing...things you do...things you dont, to please the average pub-going punter.

My point is that you wouldn't try anything outrageous that wouldn't please the typical beer drinking yodel machine.

I like the outrageous, because i've seen everything else done a million times, because of my experience.

This is just a personal opinion and matter of taste, through MY appreciation of aesthetics.  I can understand why other people would enjoy it, like I did ten years ago, without hearing similar for years and years...

Dman,

please stop with your comments about the 'typical pub type player' . It is not constructive and often appears to dis the player. It creates a pointless argument because you invariably end up with the' in my opinion' argument.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion but you do tend to shout yours, a bit like a bully. (which I know you're not).

The whole 'pub' thing you talk of is wrong. A very good friend of mine, an ex Marshall demonstrator and now currently working with Hughes and Kettner (let alone the fact he's recorded, played and toured with, Back street Crawler, Paul Macca, Roger Waters, Paul Young,Eric Clapton, The Who, Elkie Brooks etc etc) often enjoys rocking down the pub on a thursady night. Playing covers of Hendrix, clapton, gary moore etc etc. The bloke is an exceptional player and the fact that he plays in a pub................

Jenny has complimented Andy. All you have done is critised him. He is there to do a job of entertaining, which he does. He maybe a raving homo etc etc, but there is no question of his ability as a player (or indeed, as a singer)

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Some of us are happy to be playing in pubs. Last night I played with one of my all time favourite local bands and we had a great gig. People danced and they cheered. We entertained. We broke NO new boundries, we didn't even try. We did what we enjoy.

I know and appreciate what you are doing with the next generation of up n coming players, but if it wasn't for the old guard, no-one would try and do anything different.

In the world of motor racing, there are races with old formula one cars that have some of the older F1 drivers. It's not 'cutting edge' racing, but it is fucking incredible to watch.

same as us old boys playing rock n blues down the pub.

As for me, I'm the luckiest man alive. I love  what I do, I love seeing other people do what they do. I have nothing to prove to anyone.

am I ranting? not really

Right Wiz, once again you have completely got the wrong end of the stick.

Firstly, I'll ask you "IS HAVING AN OPINION BEING A BULLY?" I'll leave you think about that one for a second, when you come back, read this:

please stop with your comments about the 'typical pub type player' . It is not constructive and often appears to dis the player. It creates a pointless argument because you invariably end up with the' in my opinion' argument.

But it is my opinion, and why should I not be able to say it?  You saying that I should'nt say it makes you seem like a bully.  You get my point here?

Everyone is entitled to their opinion but you do tend to shout yours, a bit like a bully. (which I know you're not).

I dont see any shouting?

The whole 'pub' thing you talk of is wrong. A very good friend of mine, an ex Marshall demonstrator and now currently working with Hughes and Kettner (let alone the fact he's recorded, played and toured with, Back street Crawler, Paul Macca, Roger Waters, Paul Young,Eric Clapton, The Who, Elkie Brooks etc etc) often enjoys rocking down the pub on a thursady night. Playing covers of Hendrix, clapton, gary moore etc etc. The bloke is an exceptional player and the fact that he plays in a pub................

It isn't wrong.  Again, you sound like a bully.  It is MY OPINION.

Jenny has complimented Andy. All you have done is critised him. He is there to do a job of entertaining, which he does. He maybe a raving homo etc etc, but there is no question of his ability as a player (or indeed, as a singer)

Now this one confuses me a little.  All I have done is criticise him?  Ok, i'll quote myself a little here:

"He's good,"

I"n the context of what you do, you are good."

"As I said above, you are good in your genre."

"give you a guitar and watch the magic..."

I'd LOVE to see Andy play on a bigger stage than a pub!

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Some of us are happy to be playing in pubs. Last night I played with one of my all time favourite local bands and we had a great gig. People danced and they cheered. We entertained. We broke NO new boundries, we didn't even try. We did what we enjoy.

And i've said it before, and i'll say it again.  I dont apprectiate it.  And once again, i'll mention the fact of living in a pub for ten years, next to one for three, and gigged for ten years.  Nothing here entertanins me anymore.

Take beer out of the equation.  What have you got left concerning entertaining music?

I know and appreciate what you are doing with the next generation of up n coming players, but if it wasn't for the old guard, no-one would try and do anything different.

What?  Don't you mean the old musicians that actually wrote the songs to inspire?  Surely you dont mean the musicians that cover the songs?  They aint going to inspire anyone to try something different in ANY way.

In the world of motor racing, there are races with old formula one cars that have some of the older F1 drivers. It's not 'cutting edge' racing, but it is fucking incredible to watch.

Yea, so in this day and age, these formula one drivers wouldn't copy and use theose old cars and technology, would they?

same as us old boys playing rock n blues down the pub.

Go for it.

As for me, I'm the luckiest man alive. I love  what I do, I love seeing other people do what they do. I have nothing to prove to anyone.

I'm happy for you.  Sincerely.  It just isn't something that interests me anymore.  Am I allowed to have that as an opinion, or is some other fucker going to jump down my throat?

ffs mate, please read my posts before making one about them...

And..

I dont dislike ALL covers bands!  This has got to stop.

I just dislike the cliche.  I dislike people going through the same old songs (sweet child of mine, TC, MS etc) with no fucking energy, and getting the solo "perfect" and thinking "yay aint we good".

I like Tortilla.  Mostly because of their choices of "covers".

I dont like it when they do I predict a riot.

I like it when they take other more unusual songs, and cover them.

Am I getting through, here?

I play in one of the cheesiest but [in my opinion] most talented local cover bands. I play bass accurately with a good sound. I have a great time. And stand no chance of ever breaking any ground - for a start I m not good enough.  People like Andy Mac - and for that matter Martin Wisbey are head and shoulders above most of the local musicians. They do what they do, enjoy it and please a great many people every weekend.

Beyond that I don t give a damn about what anyone else is doing. I think we all know Dmans opinion on everything musical by now.And you know what - he is perfectly entitled to it. But like everyone else, Im perfectly entitled not to give a shit about his opinion.

You try and pay some one a compliment and www3 starts!!!   At the end of the day this was a public acknowledgement that I saw a brilliant musician on Friday night, who fully entertained the crowd he was playing to.  This is not about any other war or whose better and why - this is about my observation of what I saw.  I'm not interested in comparisons.

I have not always been Andy's greatest fan, before i met him i thought he was a real w***er and a bit of a to**er, however once i had met him I realised I had read him completely wrong and he is actually a really nice guy (not that he will admit to this bit as I think he loves his bad boy image!

One thing I did see on Friday night is that Andy is an extremely able and talented musician.  His guitar playing was brilliant but so was his vocals.  I guess I noticed his vocals more because that is my field and I feel more able to offer an opinion on this.  It was a very hot and busy venue with a lot of different people to entertain, yet he didn't drop a note once.  A lot of songs he did were not standard male songs and he did them brilliantly as well as a lot of medleys that were a lot of vocals on.  He did not have any backing tracks to hide in, everything he did was exposed  and any mistakes he could have made would have been obviously, however I honestly didn't notice any.  I would say that what Andy did was far more difficult than what I do, as i have chance to get a quick drink in etc.

I don't have to pay Andy these compliments, in fact I'm probably the last person he would expect a glowing report from, but credit where credit is due Andy Mack is a very talented musician.

I thought the idea of this site was to offer constructive advice and observation and compliments.  I'm not sure that some of the comments posted on this thread by Dman has been constructive and I have to agree with Wizzy that for some reason Andy has been negatively attacked, which is a shame if you haven't seen him live.  I honestly don't think you can assess Andy's ability until you have seen him live

And you do compliment people, Kris.  It is noticed.

I've "gushed" about a number of people and bands on here on occasions.  (Apologies for that term, Jenny).  I've done it when I've been moved by the players.

On the best occasions, the 'context' became irrelevant because they were playing BEYOND pub level, and I remember using that term about Zambu the first time I saw them.  I was knocked out.

In my mind, I was gone.  I was no longer in a pub.
Does anyone understand this?...  The context didn't matter.  The quality did.

That is not to decry or belittle pub work (tho the physical conditions of playing in the most cramped of them does get on my nerves).  It is not to say that people were "ONLY" playing in a pub.

It is to say that their playing is of a standard that was of great quality and could have fit a grander context.

I cite seeing Lawrie Bolton - someone who doesn't come on here... chosen deliberately - playing keyboards close up as a moment that 'shocked' my sensitivity.  I was emotionally knocked out by seeing him in the Dolphin in Broadstairs.  It was inspirational.

I had palpitations and was close to tears on the drive home, if I'm honest.  (Not bullshitting here).  Stuff like that stays with me for a couple of days, usually.  I'm an emotional sod.

I'm more affected by a player close up in a pub (for example) that at the 02.  A pub can be a revelation into musos' playing.

There are a LOT of people on the local circuit who play to a very high standard.  It's fantastic, really.  Spike is right in what he wrote earlier.

I'm sure Jenny (forgive me, love) was feeling something similar to when I saw Lawrie that night.  She had a great moment and wanted to share it.

Musicians should praise each other.

Even though horses for courses is a given.

"Musicians should praise each other"  ....................... absolutely !

Only some appear to find it hard when it's not them being told how wonderful they are !

It would appear that with certain posts there's a lot of " you got the wrong end of the stick" .

When this becomes overtly frequent by one user, is the fault of the writer or reader ?

I've seen Andy play, and (in my opinion) I would agree with many of the comments made. Niether do I feel the need to highlight those with which I disagree.

Many have an opinion, the wise chose when to share it !
