"... I fear we may lock horns at some point soon and that's not good for anyone."

I'll defend my philosophical stance and if it leads to (intellectual) conflict, well that's a fight I'll not shy away from.

(I hope in can be done in a civilised way and the protagonists can not take themselves or their opponents too seriously) .

I'm not quite insulted, more frustrated, with the idea that because I require proof, that I reject groundless theories then that somehow makes ME the self-righeous one.  Surely it is the person who puts forward an idea that cannot be substantiated but expects it to be blindly accepted that is guilty of this?

Seems to always come down to two, very simple conflicting views.

Some believe there is a force outside of us, and our scientific 'reality', that created us, wilfully, and continues to have some degree of influence over and among us and all who share the planet with us. There is no evidence for this view.

Others don't believe this view. There is no evidence for this, either. How could there be?

The problems occur when one group accuses the other of arrogance and assumption in their point of view. "How can you say your view is truer than mine?"

The only sensible answer I can come up with to that one is "I can't. Of course. And I don't need to. No evidence = nothing to prove, or disprove. This means we are talking about nothing, unless you can prove the 'something'. So - there is nothing. The subject does not exist. So what do you want to drink? I believe it's my round."

(Unless, of course, it's their's. Can't stand apologists. Wink)

I think that the whole world's problems could well be sitting here in this thread...

There is some truth in that Dman.  I'm a great believer in that 10% doubt on all subjects is the way forward but I'm not so sure I'm in the majority with that view and it seems a shame as ultra confidenmce in anything often leads to serious confrontation as neither side leaves itself in a position where compromise is possible.

I kinda worded that wrong.

I meant in the sense that we can't all agree.

Everyone agreeing would be awful...

Dud, you're asking for proof, but surely in doing so you are showing that you have none yourself?

Ok, I worded that wrong as well...

Anyway.  "The answers".  Isn't it more exciting to not know?

That's , erm, ironic.

That's the whole point of science - the search for the answers to everything.

Religion - any religion - on the other hand fundamentally opposes that search. The more we know the more religion loses its authority.

God works in mysterious ways? Either a self-aware bon mot or the laziest bit of nonsense you'll ever hear. And one of the most pernicious.

No, I meant in the context of the "right and wrong" religion.

I think it's best that we just forget about religion, and look at the facts that we DO have to work with (science).

lol, I'm not doing a very good job of explaining myself today.  It's the heat.

With of these posts are contradictory, mtn?

(Might be worthwhile slipping in a 'to me' after 'don't make sense', too, cos they all make sense to me, or I thought they did.)
