One of the all time non sequiturs, that. I see what the fella meant when he said it, but more to the point would be "If god doesn't exist, many people will still prefer to think he does." Not to try and trump Voltaire, of course. Seems odd to me that there are people who willingly admit to believing simply because it's just too horrible to think of life without 'something else'. I think that anything that can keep people on the right path in life, giving them something to aspire to is a good thing. It's not religion that causes wars, sadly its the way people wrongly interpret them that does.. If someone religion is beer, and they are aspired by beer, and beer makes them happy whilst not harming themselves or anyone else, then I am all for it..

there is nowt before we enter the world and i think its the same when you leave, people say that when you die or approach death that a passed one comes for you, i think its the brain lasts acts of calmness and peace on a body on the point of death. man can reason with him self into circles, convince himself beyond proof because at the end of the day maybe because we cant comprehend that after 80 odd years of loving , living ,laughing and crying that that it turns off like a light when we die. oh and if his holinesss is real and awake today 6 days of rain is enough you can stick 40 up your a**e |

I'm sure you can work out what the underlying point is in the sentence though? It's basically offering up the notion that god is a man made idea. http://www.answerbag.com/q_view/521392 is the first thing I googled. Forgive me for saying so, I don't mean to offend, but you seem a little bit precious about Aetheism. You're very defensive, even when there is nothing to defend against! I haven't said anything to undermine your point of view. It's almost like you're determined to disagree about something. |

No offence taken, Lee. Yeah, I can see how I sound a bit defensive. I'm not really, but it can't help come out that way on this subject, it seems. The annoying thing is that, when the smoke clears, it's only ever arguing about nothing.. Anyway, the sun is shining and I've got the whole day to lounge, so all is cool. LeeW, Is your last comment directed at me? I suppose it must be :) If I come over as precious that's just my natural campness - apologies. It is a subject I feel passionate about. And as such I'm sure I get my panties in a wad when it simply isn't necessary. That said, as we are having a bit of a dialectic here, which is a thoroughly good and enjoyable thing, it's always good to maintain a standard of logical correctness. I had the JW turn up at my house in similar circumstances. There was a middle aged man and a young lad (15-16?). I told them I wasn't interested as I am an atheist. I virtually had to shut the door in their faces to make them go away. I then had a sudden horrible thought... turned around, re-opened the door and called after the lad "Get out.... get out while you still can! You can live your own life!!!"
