But its not like that elsewhere, in my experience...

None of the bands I've ever met that are doing well outside of Kent have ever had to resort to having an extra hours worth of covers as a means of getting their own stuff heard....

I'm not trying to discredit bands like TA, Tallon, Jester, Dayfall and others that play their own songs mixed with covers, but I just don't see that to be the case anywhere other than Kent....

Luckily, there is a lot of work being done away from pubs as well.  It's a dying trade, musically I think.

The creative foundation have some great ideas.  I've been on the phone to them the past couple of days.  They are forward thinking people, which are trying to promote talent and help people, rather than choke it.

I'm a permanent music mentor with the KCC now, and am going to try and somehow link the two together.  I've had a few discussions with my bosses, and they are certainly proactive and nodding in the right places concerning young musicians.  The KCC and the CF working together would be wicked.

actually, the discussion has gone completely off topic.

It's about the Gate Inn, hythe and the fact that they are trying to keep the bands going.

Good on em.

I played Teenage Kicks the other night. I sang it too, for the very first time . I bloody enjoyed it and so did the audience.

Tonight I will be singing Sweet Child o' mine (for probably about the 800th time). I will thoroughly enjoy singing it again and I'm sure the thoroughly busy Frenchman pub in Folkestone, will thoroughly enjoy hearing it (again).

Dman, please don't forget that some of us enjoy playing covers together. The pub-going punter also enjoys hearing them.

It's what we choose to do. Stop giving us and our old duffers music a hard time.

I'm 40 this year and I stopped wanting to be rock/pop star many years ago. I don't write my own music because I don't want to. There are other things I do that make me happy.

I enjoy my life just the way it is.

I'm waffling again. Now Brian, where's that rabbit!!!!

Playing in London so much, I saw that as well Jim.

I've been saying it for years on here, but have been seen as a cunt for doing so.  I'm glad you still visit this site now you are based outside of Kent, and can share your experiences from the outside.  Sometimes it gets a bit cliquey here.

I'm not saying there is a wrond and right, Wiz.

I'm only talking from my experience with young people, and current attitudes to music.

Have you ever thought Dman that the because the way you think things should be done is so blatantly not working then you might be wrong?

How can young originals bands get good enough to book, if they dont get the stage time to polish their act?

There's a little thing that i used to do when i was starting out, now it seems a crazy idea, but try and stick with me on this.

When i was a youngster, before i even did a gig i used to repeatedly play the songs i was going to perform, away from an audience so if i/we made mistakes it wouldn't matter so much.

What i found came with all this repeated playing, was i would make fewer and fewer mistakes until the point where i didn't make any mistakes at all and i could play the songs with my flies closed!

So then when i came to do my first ever gig, at the Leas Cliff Hall, although i was a little nervous, i knew that i wouldn't have a problem playing the songs so that helped me relax and put on a good show.

And it was all down to that repeated playing of the songs in private that meant we sounded great from the first gig.

Someone should come up with a word for it! Like 'rehearsing' or something!!

We also then did several pub gigs and found that people/landlords were more than happy to give us gigs even though they had never heard of us and we were an ORIGINALS ONLY band..

Maybe it's because we had more of a professional attitude about it and not thinking that the world owed us something because we were bad boy cool guys in a band!! We wouldn't act like twats and get pissed at gigs because we thought it was cool, we used 3 part harmony because we weren't worried that being able to actually sing and have complex vocal arrangements seems to be something completely lacking from most 'cool young original bands'.

I have carried this professionalism throughout my musical career and that is why i get a fuck load of bookings all over the country and abroad, and when i come to gig my next batch of original stuff with Keri i will be able to pick which venues i want to play in because i have spent years building myself an excellent reputation.

Original or cover music, the average landlord wont care as long as it's played well!

It's like someone can't get a shag and blaming it on women kind rather than the fact that they are pig fudging ugly!!!

The very essence of my argument.

Why do you keep on pointing the finger at me?

I'll say it once more.  Just so it gets through.

I work with young people, and this is how they feel.

That's right.  Point the finger at them now, just because it doesnt sit in with your ideal.

Anyway, i'm off to a party that has some of the best musical talent in Kent.

There are no landlords or money involved, so therefore people can pretty much play what they want.  I dont expect there will be one "perfect" solo of some song I heard on a c.d in sight.

Ta ta.

they are the one's apparently complaining because they can't get gigs, i thought i was helping by explaining how i have always got gigs, be it covers or originals!

turn around, bright eyes!!!!

I have no idea how that song has made it onto my computer!!!

Old bonnie didn't write the song though so i guess i'm listening to a cover artist!!!

It shouldn't be allowed!Laughing

Love you anyway, have a nice evening.

Will do.

Anyway, read this thread through so you know whats going on.  No-one is complaining about not being able to get gigs.  I dont know where you are getting this stuff from?  read the thread.

This are the ones that dont want to play gigs in pubs, for all the reasons I named above.  God knows why you and wiz are going on about something completely different.  I've said it a million times, I dont "hate" covers bands, just bored of them, and anyway this has nothing to do with my personal opinion.

Must dash dude.  Ta ta.
