yep....and the 'any good' part of your reply is not whether you think you are any good

Full diaries tend to give it away in my experience

Not at all.

Full diaries are just a reflection of the specific scene and type of people you are playing to/for.

The pub scene, as I said above.

ha ha, I hadn't heard that phrase for ages "dad music" but its right! but 15 years ago i was only 11, still another 7 years til i'd have first picked up a guitar!

I remember the remnants of that scene of young originals bands fading away, when the county in ashford wasn't a wetherspoons, and had bands up the back, them were good times

hang on, my "how good you are or aren't" if you actually read the whole sentance is in reference to the originals crowd, because it DOESN'T! the market is geared towards covers. There are next to no originals only acts in kent that have full diaries, I'm aware of both the talent and bookability in covers bands that leads to full diaries, but that wasn't at all what i was talking about.

EDIT: to stop myself looking like a stroppy twat coz I'm having a bummy day at work

Oh, that was my favourite bit.

Can we avoid an originals vs covers argument?  Its feckin' boring and we all know that I'm more right than everyone else who is right.

and I agree with you spike, but the fact of the matter is, the originals that are of merit are usually working away from kent or away from the pubs, which was the case in point

its a silly arguement, especially seeing as most people here to some extent enjoy both!

Its relevent though jim...

Pubs now only tend to book covers bands, because they bring in a crowd.  Normally of a specific age.

Young, originals bands dont get a look in or opportunity.

Spikes comment, I disagree with:

How can young originals bands get good enough to book, if they dont get the stage time to polish their act?  And even if they do get good, they still wont get the opportunity, and will move onto London etc.

Wait for the "I'd rather see a good cover band over a bad original band" argument.  Thats one of my favourites.

Surely, the answer is the tried and tested method, do covers and originals, covers can be done in your own way if necessary, build a following and gradually shift the balance. A classic example of this method being successful is Tortilla Army, no shortage of bookings for them Smile

I see where you're coming from, and I can't work out why its like that here when it feels so different elsewhere.

It's a little depressing to think of the amount of hard work some bands put in just to get nothing out of it around here.

I won't lie here either.  I know a bloke in Soton that will play literally anywhere, and he won't touch Kent.  The younger bands that are popping up around the country don't come here either, yet they'll go and play a living room in Hampshire?  Hmm...

But what if they dont want to do covers?  They are musicians and want to write their own music, and have it heard?

And then...even if they DID do covers, they wouldn't be able to do covers by the bands they love unless they are bands the landlord thinks the punters will like.

If they love I predict a fucking riot, teenage fucking kicks and mustang fucking sally, they are going to be ok, aint they?

If they dont love playing those songs (fuck, look at most covers bands setlists...they are all the same..add sweet child o mine to that list) then they aint going to have fun playing music to people, are they?

James, thankfully that attitude is happening here as well.  I know a few parties like this.

If you dont want to compromise while you're learning your trade then you shouldn't really expect to much imo.
