Hi All.

I was on one of my weekend run rounds the local area listening to bands when I passed the gate in Hythe and saw the door open with a few people in. ( I thought it was closed)

I went in and spoke to the new landlady who said she had only just opened that day!!!! she showed me a calendar full of band bookings! I looked to see if the notes were down to play and we were, I told her that we had been told a month ago that all music was stopped and all our gigs were cancelled. ( it could be that they just don't like us :-(   )

I am not sure if anyone one else is in the same boat but if you were down to play at the gate it might be worth giving her a call, she seemed a really nice lady and i think she just wants to get the pub back on its feet. I noticed Live and kickin, Fallen angels and a few others were on the calendar.

If it is just the notes please accept my apologies.

All the best  Thumbs Up

We were told by the previous landlord that all gigs following the closure were to be cancelled and we pulled them from the book so, as far as we are concerned, we are not playing there this year Confused

I got a call too as it happens, to see if we are still ok to play there again but alas I've filled the now available again dates with new venues as i was led to believe it was finishing live music and turning into a restaurant!

I think shes gonna be a bit pissed off by the end of today.

I hope she can make a go of it again, nice gig until recently. Had a lot of time for the last landlord/landlady but the clientel didn't match them

Boys & Girls.

The Gate closed and we lost a live music venue that we all need, there's too many pubs closing and music ones are hard to come by.

This landlady has taken the pub on and has a calendar with names on! it was not her fault that the previous people stopped music. If we don't play there ever again I would like to think one or two of you lot will be playing there next time I drop in.

When I'm not playing I like to get out and support other bands as we all know its the amount of beer tickets sold that makes them book us,  not the fact that live music is the in thing. Most pubs serve food with Beer or wine if they can get you to buy it... we need every pub to keep booking bands, we started there earning £10 £20 a night just covering petrol but it was a great buzz at the end of the night.... if it went well!!!   lol

Good luck to those of you who will be playing down there, I hope you have a great gig and get more bookings out of it. She might be good or bad but you have to give the lady a chance.

If another venue goes down the pan where are all the young ones going to start off? I hope it goes well for them and in return you lot get a load of bookings.

All the best  Thumbs Up

I've just spoken to the landlady at the Gate. I think she and the booked bands have been unfairly stitched up a bit by gigs being cancelled that should never have been cancelled.  She is very keen for live music to continue at her venue.  I would suggest that all acts that were booked at the Gate call her and check the dates and let her know what they can and can't do so she is able to straighten the whole thing out.

She was really nice when I spoke with her and is very concerned by all of this unfortunate turn of events, which has nothing to do with her as she hasn't cancelled anyone.  She really wants to get the pub back on it's feet and for it to have a really rep, so I think she would appreciate all the support we can offer.

I got the same feeling from her. I hope it goes well, and only 15mins down the road from me.

If another venue goes down the pan where are all the young ones going to start off?

Not that many actually give a shit about doing the pub scene.

There is a thread somewhere, where I mentioned that music is going underground quite a bit.  Outdoor gigs, parties, scout huts, raves, etc.  Kids aren't bothered about playing for money-just a good time.

Good on em, I say.

 here here!

In all honesty, I'm not that young, but I am relatively just starting out, and I can honestly say regardless of how many venues there are the pub scene seems clicky and closed off, it wouldn't matter how good you were ( or weren't) because the established acts have in effect got the circuit sewn up, for new bands / singer-songwriters and all others shows put on by people promoting seem to be the only way in, especially if you're playing originals

I see what you're saying there dude, but they actually see it as un-cool.

It's not the same as it was ten years ago.  These kids really dont want to play pubs.  As I said, I think it's a good thing, because they are playing to their own friends under their own rules.  It's a completely different culture of music, and I love it.  The future looks good.

But yes, what you say above is probably one reason why they see it as un-cool.  I mean, what is the age of the typical dominant pub covers band?  These kids don't aspire to become that at all.  Infact, it scares them a little bit.

"Dad music"  they call it.

Ten years ago, proper young and rocking original bands were also doing the circuit, and giving people their own age a reason to go to pubs.  In the current climate, there isn't much opportunity for original bands, as you say, because of the changes in the local (and national) local undustry. So the main audience these days are middle aged people playing middle aged music.

Nothing's changed, really. If you're any good you'll work regularly - irrespective of what you do.

Two things I've seen changing that I like.

In Southampton, every once in a while, there is a house show that goes on.  Normally of one local band and a few out of towners as well.  This gets the out of town bands a few followers in that town, and ensures that when they come back, there will be some familiar faces knocking about.

Lots more donation paid shows.  Its still a system I quite like, it seems to have done well at most gigs I've been to with it running.

On the other hand, younger bands that are starting to step it up a notch seem more likely to split up these days.  I Was a Cub Scout did so this week, Reuben have gone too.  It seems like to step out of a scene is a bigger risk than ever.
