MUSICAL/PERFORMANCE HELP SOUGHT BY A SCHOOL IN JULY

Could you help?...

Arts Festival
Ellington School, Pysons Road, Ramsgate
Mon 30 Jun am/pm
Tue 01 Jul am/pm
Wed 02 Jul am/pm
Thu 03 Jul am/pm

The school where I work is planning an Arts Festival for all pupils aged 11–15.  There will be workshops in Music, Dance, Drama and Art.  The pupils are all girls, and the vast majority of them are well-behaved and motivated to perform in all the listed disciplines, although their instrumental knowledge is basic or non-existent in most cases.  They are, however, often keen singers in the younger years.

My pupils always react positively to good input.  They are not reluctant to volunteer.

My guitar peripatetic teacher and I already have confirmed workshop/performance input with some sponsorship for:

Keyboards - complete
Drums - complete
Saxophone – some sessions
Male Vocals – probably complete
Guitar – probably complete
Female Vocals – possibly complete
Rhythm/PC/Recording Software – partly complete

Likely external input includes:

African drumming workshops
Sitar and Raga workshops
A Beatbox dude

I’m looking for:

People who could work with classes of around 15 pupils to demonstrate their expertise, and then go on to encourage kids to participate and try things for themselves.  This could be in an agreed aspect of playing / writing / performance.

Each slot would last 50 minutes, but there will be flexibility.  You will never be left alone with groups of pupils.  A member of staff will be with you at all times.

I am seeking individual or group help for:

  • Drum&Bass / Decks
  • Percussion workshop with unusual instruments
  • Other standard band instruments
  • PC assisted composition
  • Lyric writing (must be allied to music – not a poetry workshop)
  • Composition / Writers’ Workshops, ie ‘How I go about writing’.  (Spike, Mo, Andy M – Remember I put something on here before about this?).
  • Female vocalists and performance/mic technique, voice projection and stagecraft. (ahem Jenny, Charlie, Jules)

What this must not be is a demonstration of how gifted you are for an hour!  It’s not a one-man or one-woman show!  It has to be to encourage participation from pupils.

CONDITIONS:

  • You will be paid for your input.  The rate is still to be confirmed.  It will be a reasonable one.
  • Lunch will be provided
  • Professional conduct and clean language must be used with minors.  No lewd jokes, etc.  (Sorry.  I’ve had problems because of this in similar circumstances before and can’t afford to let the muck hit the fan at work again).
  • A strict no smoking policy is in operation across the large site.  Popping outside for a quick smoke is not an option
  • The school is likely to insist on CRB clearance for all visitors

The sessions will be split into morning and afternoon slots (divided into 50 minute periods) thus:

Morning          0845 – 1245 (roughly)
Afternoon       1330 – 1515 (roughly)

The school has been open for almost a year and is a new build.  Facilities are generally very good.

If you are interested in taking part in these days, please email me with the details below.  Even if you can only make one 50 minute session and would really like to, please make contact.

Please send:
YOUR NAME
YOUR AVAILABILITY   (PLEASE BE VERY CLEAR WHICH DAYS AND AM/PM ETC)
WHAT YOU COULD OFFER   (IN SOME DETAIL)
RESOURCE IMPLICATIONS (ie WHAT YOU WOULD NEED TO BE PROVIDED, AND WHAT YOU CAN BRING.  PLEASE BE DETAILED TO THE LAST EXTENSION CABLE)
YOUR CONTACT DETAILS

Please understand:

This is a large proposal across many areas of the school, and if there aren’t sufficient slots filled by one of the other subjects - or mine - the entire project might be cancelled.  However, this is very unlikely.

To make my life easy, I must initially favour people whom I know, or know of, to be reliable.  I must also know that they can handle impromptu group jams with no hassle, for example.  I must also respect my peripatetic teacher’s contacts.  No offence intended if I run with some of his bandmates in the end, etc, because he is part of the team.

Above all, I’m looking for help from enthusiasts and good communicators locally who are available at these times, and who know they can transmit their personal thing well.

If you are interested, please email me here:  elton1984@msn.com

Any enquiries or offers of help by Mon 12 May, please.

Many thanks.
Bryan Orwell

We (The Jesus Mafia) are back together, we would be more than happy to put on  a demonstration of how not to act when performing.....we could be the poster ads "Kids....Don't End Up Like This".....multiple venue bans from one gig (our 1st).......impressive.

I would highly recommend Dman, being he already works with kids on all levels and has some exceptional talent on the bass.

NOTE: Are antics caused the bans, not our music!

DOUBLE NOTE: Cause we are f'ing awesome....but it got a touch rakish, like a tipped hat.

A 3RD: In fact one reviewer said, and I quote "Once I regained consciousness and picked up my teeth I had an interesting experience having a guitar removed from my colon, all in all 5 thumbs up for The Jesus Mafia".

If we can help then drop me an email.

Yep, i'm more than willing to help.  I have assisted with stage techinque/vocal lessons before, so have a good idea what you are looking for.  I am enhanced CRB checked for lone working with vunerable people (that covers the teachers!!) and children by KCC already (I have a copy but you can contact KCC personnel to confirm this, as i know that's usually what is required)

Any day is fine on that list and any time too, just let me know so I can book some time off.  I would do this with Jules, but as she is due to give birth some time between 24th June and July 1st, it might not quite be the master class you are looking for (but it would cover the biology lesson that week and probably put them off having sex for at least a day!!)

I have alot of expertise with Sibelius and Cubase software and obviosly with the piano.

And can teach classical theory, jazz theory and orchestration.

I am a member of the Musicians Union so I can get CRB checked.

Thanks for these so quickly, guys.  Much appreciated.

I emailed Kris to seek his possible input even before posting this but I haven't had a reply yet.  I know he works with The Youth.  Perhaps he's been building rafts with them on Bewl Water.  In any case, I'm sure I've seen what's needed.

Will mull over suggestions tomorrow.  (Jenny - Yours is valued because you can tell I have difficulties in becoming a throat-coaching dame).

Have just finished watching the second night of about four hours of FLOOD on ITV1.  I'm sucked dry of all emotions like a sweaty sheet with burning post-Bandstand legs.

Yet I realise, spookily, that I've just completely frittered away a portion of my life on this couch.  I should have watched 28 Days Later for the 50th time instead.

Kam.  It's well tempting, that one.  Like solemn hymns to New Zealand.

Marcus - Thank you.  I'll have to think on now and make a jigsaw with my oppos.

Other manifestations of interest welcome. Smile

Chaps

Without making that post four miles long, I do need to know:

YOUR AVAILABILITY   (PLEASE BE VERY CLEAR WHICH DAYS AND AM/PM ETC)
WHAT YOU COULD OFFER   (IN SOME DETAIL)
RESOURCE IMPLICATIONS (ie WHAT YOU WOULD NEED TO BE PROVIDED, AND WHAT YOU CAN BRING).
YOUR CONTACT DETAILS

And, obviously,
WHAT YOU PROPOSE TO DO WITH GROUPS IN ANY 50 MIN SLOT (PRETTY CRITICAL).

Email preferred.

Jenny - Very clear.  But is that on all days, or just the one (etc)?  Tell this lone, looked-after, vulnerable prof.
(We can't stop the endless rabbit sex thing, but we do try to counsel without flame-throwing.  Not good for anyone's libido).
Wink

Marcus/Shepz - More detail, please.

KamDan: Irene - London.  Available?

Wilco, Al.  No problems.

I was reminded that there is a theme for this project called THE SENSES, so I guess we put on Tommy on repeat for 96 hours.

As long as things relate to THE SENSES in some way, it's a runner.

 I'm available anytime in July.

I could offer teaching from beginners to advanced in piano, jazz and classical theory, Cubase, Sibelius, midi sequencing, song writing and improvising.

I will need computers equipped with cubase or Sibelius, or another sequencing program for computer software teaching.

I will be teaching pop song writing using software as the platform. The students will be taught the basic structure of a pop song e.g. intro, verse etc… The students will be then put into groups to compose there own pop song.

I will be providing drum patterns for different parts of the song e.g. intro drums, verse drums and fills along with a template of the song structure to use on the software.

The students will be asked to write there own vocal melody, bass part and keyboard part using the software to record.

Handouts will be given out on how to use the software along with example chords.

The lesson plan will work a lot better if it is scheduled for after a workshop where students are taught basic chords etc…

If piano/live performance is needed I can put the students into groups with a keyboard each to play a different section of a orchestral piece or pop song. For example Group A will be playing the string parts, B wood wind etc…

Or pop song with Group A playing the different parts of a drum kit for the drum section.

Hiya

I can do any of those days, but cabn only really only offer one session as I will have to take time off work and as  I don't worl in Thanet anymore i can't unfortunately use my lunch hour time.  Put me down for any one session overall from any of the days offered.

I'm not sure that made sense - did it???

Good news, guys.  It's on, and those of you in the posts above who expressed an interest are all welcome to take part.

Most of EK1 - Denny, Andy Race, Andy Doble, Phil and I - and Andy Mack, plus Phil Baxter and his contacts, as well as some outside troupes, are likely to be - or will definitely be - involved, too.

Bear with me for more info and more explanation soon.

Filth!  Grin

It would be great if you and Jenny could do one of the Performance slots together.
You would win big time!

Could you email me, mother?

Thanks for your email, Jools.
I think Jenny can play the midwife if it comes to the crunch. Grin

This is looking very promising.
I'm chasing a couple of people on here and off here for specific times.
Then we can firm up exactly what's going to happen. WinkLaughing

No sweat about this needed, please.
It will be our usual sort of Mixed Emotions things tweaked thru National Curriculum free-jazz mittens to hit Gordon's spot.  (He's a Bee Gees man, apparently).
I'll teach you how to make OFSTED thrilled and all runny.

The emphasis is on participation and fun.
More It's A Knock Out than Sally Jessy Raphael, therefore.
It's about the senses, so we'll crank it up and light Martellos.

Don't let my flippant stupidity put you off.  It will be really good fun, this.
And I'm actually quite a serious-minded man.
More direction after the slackers buzz in Laughing.
