Hello all you keen people, I know a few bands are now recording at live gigs. Is anyone using shure pg 81 on the drums? or a similar mic at around the same price? I am looking for 3 mic's for the hi hats and over heads. Anyone got any ideas or suggestions of what mic's to use. If you get a good sound out of sm58's please let me know. other than the normal bleeding what other problems do you come up against. Many thanks/

Hi I use AKG's normally on live and studio recordings, however i doubt you'd wanna spend a grand for a pair of 414's which i use but the c1000's are still great for live overhead work ! sms7 beta's are good on hats as are the 58's all down to trial and taste, but AKG are my normal choice or Nuemann, but again we're talking money, the UA47's sound fckn awesome on hats ! You can get a bit of flexability in the EQ'ing of your mic's in the post production on your recordings if your recording them on seperate tracks, by rolling the low end off the overheads and... on the high hats i'd put a gate on them with the DB threshold set to allow the exteme hats through, you will have some bleed but should only be minimal with a decent threshold ! better in the mix if you want a spritey HH ! hope that helps ! |

Hi.
Got some AKG's 1000c's and they are really bright and make a big differance to the over all drum sound.
thanks

I've got an AK-47. Shooting the drummer makes a huge difference to the drum sound.

I have a large selection of small diaphragm condensers in my studio, some of them very high-end - and the Shure PG81 beats all of them every time. Don't be put off by the fact that it's cheap, if it sounds right then it's cool. |

I use a minidisc and a stereo mic. Need to think about where to position the mic for balance - surprisingly good when you get it right tho. |

Got my hands on a nice pair of mics for around £50 the other day... 2xBehringer C2 Recommended by several people to mic acoustic/overheads/ambience, general use really.... Cant argue for that price!!! Haven't tried them as yet but I will be using them for audience recording and overheads for the drums... I will be getting another pair soon. I quite like behringer stuff but I do sense they are not well liked by quite a few... Its good for me because I can afford it. If I had more money I would go for the best you could get. |

Fair point Paul Affordability sometimes has to come into it, and if anybody can get them to sound how they want I'm sure you will |

Not saying you cant get a decent sound from budget mic's you understand ! hence why i said i like the C1000's just as good as the 414's for overheads, just get more options with 414's like being able to do 'Mid-Side' config's which really broadens the stereo image ! and the amount of polar patterns available, and attenuation pads, can make a difference in many cases ! as long as it's positioned well you should get a half decent sound outta most on the market. |
