A JGS song with no jokes...hmmm....

I'm still fiddling around with this, I keep taking and replacing words, trimming and editting.  I thought I'd try and write something that wasn't so wrapped up in jokey bravado and the second verse was playing around my head.  I've a little guitar part, but I'm still working on that as well...

Sheltered Shrubs
I'd search around for someone who'd relate
To feeling like my dreams had began to deflate
My lungs can't provide a second wind
More air comes out than seems to go in

The front door slammed on us a long time ago
But I can't stop staring at the window
For a little sign that you're uncertain
A flicker from a bulb that lights up your curtain

It was the greatest fantasy I ever had
I'd never imagine it'd end waving white flags
I've got to concede and let common sense win
Although when I say your name an angel gets it wings

The ideas for my songbook have run out of ink
It's not just rowing boats that seem to sink
A stormy sea wanting sheltered shrubs
Page upon page of unrequited love

It was the greatest fantasy I ever had
I'd never imagine it'd end waving white flags
I've got to concede and let common sense win
Although when I say your name an angel gets it wings

Cheers Special K.

I wrote it before watching Zach Braff in The Last Kiss. I've been calling it Sheltered Scrubs since.

I'll be going for it, its just, everything i write these days seems to end up sounding like tosh ( new girlfriend making everything i write end up all mushy!)

if theres one thing i like about your stuff, its that its honest, and i like the way you put your words together, but... and don't hate me for this, but that secon line "To feeling like my dreams had began to deflate" sounds like there are too many words there, i was thinking maybe you could leave out the "like my" so it would just be "to feeling my dreams had began to deflate" may just make it sound like less of a mouthful?

but what do i know, I could just be being overjudgemental coz i moody this week!

Well thats singer/songwriter law I'm afraid!  Mush is the key!

Going solo? Prepare to be told by most people that see you that you're very brave, and they couldn't have gotten up there on their own.   I'm never sure how to respond to that one....

yeah going solo alongside the band for the mo i think, just as an expression, stuff i need to get out there without having to worry about 3 other peoples opinions on what i call a song or how i sing it and play it

only tried to go solo once, when i was a lot younger (20 i think) had been in bands since 15, but moved away for a while and couldn't find a band i gelled with, so went for it, wasn't at all ready and was slaughtered, landlord leant over the bar and gave me the " cut" signal 4 songs into my first set, i didn't do another gig til september last year and that was with bands, so its certainly a bit of a challenge for me, but one that i want to break nonetheless

Sounds familiar.

I refused to write songs for my old band (I still do actually, I'm a pain in the arse to anyone that joins a band with me).  My thing was that we were better as a unit than we were writing songs seperately.  We could each write a song and they'd all be completely different and it was stupid to me when we could've worked together and written something brilliant.   Then I wrote a couple of songs on my acoustic that didn't fit in with the punk thing, so I kept them for myself.  Pissed the others off I imagine, but I wasn't overly fussed.

Once you carve out your own character in your songs, stuff that are just pure you, and not collaborative with other people, you feel great about it and it just fires you up.  Thats how it works for me anyway.

with the band at the mo, i write all the lyrics, and a few of the songs, but everyone chips in musically, and thats great, it really fills out those flat parts in a song, but at the same time, sometimes it needs those flat bits as a bit of character i've always felt..... I'll be getting started very soon, just need to start recording stuff, you may be able to help actually, if you go in the tech chat on "the mrs" i posted some queries there
